A Shortest Run

Rehashed Run No: 1574; Hare/Occassion: Chinese New Year Celebration Run; Date: February 22, 2005; Venue: Bukit Katil
The year of rooster or cock comes once in 12 years. It is very auspicious. It will turn every harrier more cocky and harriet more cheeky.

This year's Chinese New Year celebration run was held in Bukit Katil. It was set by ex-GM Killer Tony. As what he is known, the mere mention of his run which is always long, complicated and exhautive will make you shiver and your balls shrink. Many hashers prefer to opt out.

The run-site was at the hare's grand bungalow house with big compound. On my arrival there as an early bird at 5.10 pm, there were already some other earlier birds there. Among them were Robert, Simon, Maureen, Websitekang, GKS, Oil Rig Lim, Debbie, Sexy Chan, Dirk and Jenny. All of a sudden the hare was seen emerging from his bungalow. Upon enquiry, he said the run was a short one which was supported by Sexy Chan who was one of his 3 co-hares. Knowing him for years, I just did not believe him but ready to take the challenge.

It was a hot day with scorching sun. It has not been raining for the past one week. The grasses were dry, the air was humid and the bodies were wet from heads to toes. In spite of that, it did not deter the ardent hashers from their weekly ritual of trudging through the brush, swamp, plantation, jungle and hill for the purpose of satisfying their crazy thirst.

The pack of early birds led by NKS started following the paper on the gravel road in the rubber plantation beside the run-site at 5.30 pm. It  hit a tar road with a few kampong houses a short distance away. From there it turned right into a path and an off-seasoned fruit plantation before arriving at a bushy path which led to a filthy and smelly drain. While crossing it on a branch, my partner slipped and stuck both her legs in the drain. Luckily she did not suffer any injury after being pulled out except that her track pants and shoes were covered with filthy and smelly mud. From then on, she was left walking alone to avoid the filthy smell.

The paper then led into a stretch of open land earmarked for housing estate. I understand that it belongs to NKS. So this is an opportunity for any interested early bird hasher to approach him for a special discount.

After going uphill for a few hundred meters, the paper led into a bushy rubber plantation. It was there that the first and only simple check appeared. It turned left to a river. From then on it was a home trail to the right along the undulating river bank, the MH3 annual 10 km road run track, the bee farm and back to the run-site where GM, Tan Yan Lye and a few others were just preparing for the run. It was 6.00 pm then. The distance was about 3 km. It was the shortest run in MH3 history. For the purpose of getting more sweat, Dirk and I went for the second round with me going on the reverse which took 19 minutes. We were later joined by GM, Biggles and Tan Yan Lye who took only 16 minutes.

Hash circle was conducted by the GM. It was well attended with 40 hashers. As usual, a few sinners were put on ice and on-downed. They included Killer Tony for laying a shortest run. It was then that we found out that he was suffering from a bad flu.

The Chinese New Year dinner was held at the Enliven Delight Restaurant in Melaka Raya. It was well attended with 6 tables. Eight traditional Chinese dishes with Yee Sang were served with free-flowing beer. Seasoned singers such as Vijay, Sexy Chan, Rita, Dr. Dave and  James sang their hearts out in karaoke session. Hampers were given to winners of lucky draw.

It was a memorable night. The crowd had only started to disperse at 10.45 pm with full stomach, clear mind and smilling face. Gong Xi Fa Cai!
