Malacca is a hashing State. In spite of its minute size with a small population of 600,000, it has 7 hashing chapters namely, Malacca Hash House Harriers, Orang Gila, Orang Hutan, Kota Malacca, HAA, Batang HHH and Full Moon Hash. Except Full Moon Hash which runs once a month on full moon day, the rest run once a week on scheduled days of Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Each chapter has a membership of 50 to 100. MH3 is the pioneer which was founded on 13th May, 1975.
With the objective of interaction and fostering better relationship among members of various chapters, annual Joint Runs were organized on rotation. This year¡¯s Joint Run was organized by Kota Malacca which was founded in 1979. It was held on 2nd April, 2005 in Bertam Hulu which is a popular run site.
It was a cool Saturday afternoon after a heavy morning downpour. On my arrival at the run site at 4.30 pm, there was already a big crowd of early birds. They were seen collecting freebies, drinking cold beer, exchanging greetings, telling cock and bull stories and bullshitting. The crowd grew bigger as time passed by until it reached 200. It was then that I saw Peter Loi standing at one corner covered with sweat. Upon enquiry, he said he was the hare and the run was a mere simple 8-km one. Knowing him for umpteen years as an ardent hasher who lay long and hilly run, I just refused to believe him but was ready to take the challenge.
It was at 5.00 pm and 30 minutes before the official flag-off time that I started to follow a few early birds into an oil palm plantation. The paper passed through an undulating terrain for 30 minutes before it hit the first check in a rubber plantation near the top of a hill. It was a difficult check. We could not find the connecting paper for 15 minutes. By then a few front runners namely, Tan Yan Lye and Danabalan had caught up. It was a few minutes later that they found the paper on the top of the hill.
The paper then went downhill into an oil palm plantation. It continued to meander through the bushes, up and down another 2 hills, a few deep drains, fruit, rubber and oil palm plantations for the next 1 hour and 30 minutes exhaustive run before we returned to the run site where most of the runners were back and the cold beer were waiting. It was at the last part of the run that we were caught up by Websitekang, his son and daughter-in-law who joined the run while on their way to United Kingdom from Australia.
It was quite a tough 10-km hilly and scenic run. Most seasoned runners and SCBs took the short cut and returned to the run site early. Only about 30 runners followed the paper and emerged late. By then, the hash circle was already over.
On-On was held at the Hikeng Restaurant in Melaka Raya. It was well-attended with about 20 tables. Various interesting hash games were played. A karaoke with sexy singer Siow Wei from Muar was in attendant. As usual, GMs from all the chapters were each given a souvenir and on-downed. It was then that the wooden cock baton for organizing the next Joint Run in 2006 was passed by the GM of Kota Malacca to GM of HAA. Wish you all the best, HAA! We are looking forward for a good run, good food, good drink and good fellowship gathering.
All good things have to come to an end when the time comes. It was at 11.00 pm that the crowd started to disperse with full stomach, smiling face and clear mind. A big thank you to Kota Melaka for organizing such a great run with good freebies, good food, good drink and good fun. On! On!
