A Memorable Cocker’s Run

Rehashed Run No: 1654; Hare: Au Kait a.k.a. Cocker; Date: 5th September, 2006; Venue: Nyonya Baba Housing Site, Gapam.

Cocker is MH3’s new GM. It was his second term since his last term in 1997. Since his election last July, we were looking forward anxiously for his run to come up. At long last, it came up last Tuesday which was a sunny day.

The runsite is a familiar one situated along the Ayer Keroh/Bemban Road some 15 km east of Malacca city. On my arrival there with my partner at 5.20 pm, except for the MH3 signboard, not a single soul was seen. It was only a few minutes later that we were joined by Yogi Bear, Dr, Dave, Dr. Iqbal, Dr. Tan, Dr. Pandirajah and two guests from Sunday Hash. As time passed by, more and more energetic hashers trickled in. They included Websitekang, Sharp Shooter Robert, Rubbish Bui, Kiasu Lee, Dennis the Menace, Debbie, Bombastic, Ngoh Kim Siah, Helen, Holly, Ichibawah, Ai Fan, Hawaii Goh, Nancy and a few guests. As usual, while waiting for the flag-off, we exchanged greetings and engaged in chit-chatting.

Strictly adhering to the rule set by GM Cocker, the run was only started at 6.00 pm after a short and sweet warm-up exercise conducted by Rubbish Bui. Like the previous run, it was led by Yogi Bear down a slope, across a stream and up an undulating abandoned open housing site for some 20 minutes before arriving at the only false trail down a slope which caught front runners Dennis the Menace and Pecker. The connecting paper was found on the right of the back trail a short distance away.

After going down a slope on a laterite road for another short distance, the paper turned left uphill into a bushy secondary jungle. It was there that we saw some SCBs led by Hawaii Goh going straight without following the paper. Determined to take the challenge, Ngoh Kim Siah, Dr. Iqbal, Dr. Dave, Ai Ling, Siow Thau, my partner and I followed the paper. It was a tough trudge through the bushy and undulating terrain for some 20 minutes before arriving at a laterite road on the hill top where we could hear and see motor vehicles passing along the North-South Highway. On the way, we were overtaken by energetic runners Ranger and Dennis the Menace who were earlier caught at the false trail.

The paper continued downhill on a laterite road for some 10 minutes where we were joined by Helen. It then went uphill into another bushy and tough rubber plantation cum secondary jungle, across a deep ditch on 2 shaky branches, and downhill for some 15 minutes before hitting the home trail on a laterite road. It was then that we were joined by Websitekang and Kiasu Lee. From then on, it was another 15 minutes’ walk through the undulating abandoned housing site before arriving back at the runsite at 7.20 pm where the front runners were enjoying their cold beer. We were the last runners to come out. It was a well-set run through some new terrains. The distance was about 6 km.

Hash circle was conducted by GM Cocker. It was well attended by some 30 odd hashers who included a few guests. Among them was Wendy who did not join the run for reason that her body was still aching after the last tough run of Websitekang and Sweetie Pie. As usual, the hare and some sinners were put on ice and on-downed. It was then that the hare announced that a buffet dinner on him would be held at the A.N.T. Pub & Bistro in Melaka Raya.

It was the first time that an On-On was held at the said Pub. The turn-out was good. Varieties of delicious food such as fried noodle, fried rice, chicken curry, satay, mixed vegetables and grilled fish were served. Other than cold beer, it went down well with whisky supplied by Dennis the Menace. With full tummy and replenished energy, some avid dancers such as Sleeping Beauty, Helen, Dennis the Menace, Websitekang, Rubbish Bui and Janet took to the floor and danced their hearts out to the tune of loud music. Others were enjoying their fellowship chatting away while sitting or moving around with their drinks.

It was a marvellous and memorable night. The party was still on when I left at 10.00 pm. Knowing the hashers, some of them might have stayed on until the wee hours.

Thank you for your good effort and hospitality, Cocker! On! On!
