An Unexpected Leisure Run

Rehashed Run No: 1638; Hare: Gilbert Chee; Date: 16th May, 2006; Venue: Taman Pelangi.

It has been slightly over one month since I last ran with the Malacca Full Moon Hash at Taman Pelangi on 12th April, 2006. It was my virgin run at this runsite. Situated at a high class housing estate a few km east of Malacca city, the run was set at the nearby hill covered with virgin forest. It was a tough hilly run ascending and descending through the bushy, thorny and winding tracks. A mere thought of it will make a hasher’s balls shrinking! However, knowing the diehard spirit of most ardent hashers, they are ever willing and prepared to take the challenge and enjoy it.

It was a cool Tuesday afternoon with cloudy sky. When my partner and I arrived at the runsite at 5.10 pm, there were already several early birds lingering around. Among them were none other than On Sec. Viagraman Simon, ex On Sec. Sharp Shooter Robert, Dr. Pandirajah, Dr. Tan, Oil Rig Lim, Ah Keow and her friend. Upon enquiry, it was found that Viagraman Simon and Sharp Shooter Robert were the co-hares who had just returned from laying the paper. They said it was a simple run which took them 1 ½ hours to lay. However, looking at the nearby hill and from our recent experience, we did not quite believe them.

It was at 5.25 pm that Oil Rig Lim, Ah Keow and her friend, my partner and I started the run as early birds. The paper led on a tar road uphill toward a few beautiful bungalows for some 400 meters before turning into a laterite path. A short distance away, it hit a steep and bushy path where we pulled ourselves up to the outer fencing of a huge water tank with the use of a rope placed by the kind hearted co-hares. It was a short distance away in an open space downhill that it hit the first and only tricky check. By then we were being caught up by Dr. Dave, Dr. Pandirajah and Dr. Tan. A spread-out search was conducted on the left, right and centre toward the fearful hill but to no avail. After some 20 minutes, the connecting paper was found by Oil Rig Lim at the back trail beside the outer fencing of the said water tank. To our great relief it did not lead to the fearful hill, but went down slope to a housing estate, passed the Vocational Industrial Institute and Taman Toh Puan Rahah before hitting the first and only false trail in Taman Tun Abdul Razak housing estate. As Ornasteel Mill was seen nearby, some SCBs opted to go straight along a tar road without following the paper. With the clue given by some kampong kids, we managed to find the connecting paper at the back trail at an open land behind Taman Tun Abdul Razak. Taking the lead were none other then Dr. Pandirajah and Dr. Tan. Very soon we were being caught up by energetic runner Tan Yan Lye, Hawaii Goh and Nancy. It was at 6.35 pm that we arrived back at the runsite after l hour and 10 minutes leisure stroll cum jog. All the runners were back by 7.00 pm when the sky was still bright.

A short a sweet hash circle was conducted by GM Garfield. In attendance were 30 odd regular hashers. As usual, the hare, co-hares and some sinners were on-downed.

On-On was held at Lau Lau Sang (663) Restaurant in Bukit Beruang which is a short distance away from the runsite. It was fully packed with 3 tables. A six course delicious Chinese dinner was served with 4 bottles of cold beer. They were on the hare. As usual, the hare, co-hares and some sinners were on-downed once again. The pack had only started to disperse at 9.15 pm after a good run and good dinner. Thanks to the hare for his generosity. We will always remember it. On! On!
