An Enjoyable Virgin Hares’ Run

Rehashed Run No: 1645; Hares: Dennis Parker/Carol; Date: 4th July, 2006; Venue: Taman Indah, Bertam Ulu

Dennis the Menace and Carol, the descendants of Christopher Colombo who discovered America, are energetic hashers who discovered Malacca Hash House Harriers in late 2005. Since then, they have started running with it regularly come rain or shine. As such, every one of us was looking forward anxiously for their virgin run which came up at long last on rotation on 4th July, 2006 which coincided with America’s 230th National Day.

It was a hot and sunny afternoon. On arrival at the new Taman Indah housing runsite at 5.10 pm, we only saw 2 cars belonging to the hares and Killer Tony with no one around. Instinct told us that they must have left early to lay the run as hares and co-hare. Knowing Killer Tony who likes to lay long and tough run, it must have caused some of us shrinking our balls and yet willing to take the challenge! A few minutes later, we were joined by Websitekang and Dr. Tan.

It was at 5.20 pm that Websitekang, my partner and I started the run as senior citizens and early birds to avoid being left behind and getting lost. We followed the paper on the left on the laterite road for a short distance before turning left to the north on an undulating and hilly open passage way of Patronas underground gas pipeline. On the way we were caught up by Dr. Tan. It was a tiring 30-minute trudge before hitting the first check in the oil palm plantation on the left. A spread out search was made. We were then joined by Bombastic and 2 guest runners. It was a tough check which made us running round in circle and took me 10 minutes to find its connecting paper some 100 meters away at the back check on the right.

The paper then led into the oil palm plantation. It meandered through the undulating terrain for some 20 minutes before hitting the second simple check with its connecting paper found by the guest runner at the back trail on the left a short distance away.

The paper continued to lead down slope for a short distance before entering an undulating rubber plantation. After trudging for some 20 minutes, it hit the third and last check near the top of a hill. A spread out search was conducted again. Its connecting paper was found a short while later a short distance away on the right in an oil palm plantation across a ditch by the same guest runner. It then led into a bushy trail where we were over taken by Dr. Pandirajah and another 2 energetic guest runners. A short distance away, we arrived at a deep and fairly wide ditch where the kind-hearted hares had placed several shaky tree branches across to facilitate us crossing. It was there that we showed our hashing spirit by helping each other to cross either by walking or slipping our buttocks on the branches. In spite of that, Bombastic nearly went off balance when one of the branches he stepped on broke. It must have shrunk his balls! From then on, it was another 2 km run meandering through the oil palm, rubber and durian plantations and few farm houses before arriving back at the runsite at 7.10 pm where the beer wagon was waiting. The last runner, Laughing Buddha, was back 30 minutes later when the sky began to turn dark. For our good efforts, each runner was awarded a beautiful green T-shirt by the hares.

Hash circle was conducted jointly by JM Dr. Iqbal and ex GM Vibrator in the absence of GM Garfield who was sick. It saw the hare, co-hare, guests and a few sinners being put on ice and on-downed. As usual, the ever-industrious Websitekang, who would be leaving shortly for a two-week winter holiday in Down Under, was seen busily clicking away the memorable occasion with his digital camera. So do not forget to take a look at the photos attached, fellow hashers!

For the first time, On-On was held at the swimming pool of prestigious Ocean Palms condominium at Ayer Lereh. It was well attended by some 60 hashers. Buffet dinner was served with varieties of mouth-watering food such as chicken curry, fried rice, fried noodle, barbecued mutton, steamed prawn, fried vegetable, apple pie and mixed local fruits. Free-flowing beer and soft drinks were also served. In attendance was a live band led by guitarists cum singers Bandboy, Pecker and Anthony who sang their hearts out to the applause of the audience. Most of the hashers took to the floor to show off their dancing skills. In conjunction with America’s 230th National Day celebration and Dennis the Menace’s 50th birthday, the happy birthday song was sang, 5 lighted candles were blown and a birthday cake was cut. In addition, fire works were displayed on the nearby beach with loud bang and colourful sky. The atmosphere was really exhilarating. The crowd had only begun to disperse at 10.40 pm with full tummy and smiling face in preparation for a nice sleep and sweet dream.

It was a grand and unforgettable occasion. A very big ‘Thank you’ to the hares for the good run, beautiful T-shirt, good food, good drink, good fellowship and their generosity. On! On!
