Rehashed Run No. 1656; Hare Vijai Deb a.k.a. Yogi Bear; Date: 19th September, 2006; Venue: Ayer Pa’abas, Lendu.
Yogi Bear is a veteran hasher who prefers bushy and hilly run. He is familiar with most of the hashing runsites in Malacca and is known to lay challenging and enjoyable runs either as a hare or co-hare. As such, most of the ardent hashers are always looking forward for his run.
At long last his run came up again on rotation last Tuesday which was a sunny day after a long lapse of time. As usual, as retirees who longed for a good sweat-out and fellowship, my partner and I left early for the popular runsite which is situated some 25 km north of Malacca city. On the way, we were surprised to meet the hare who was buying some hawker food at a ‘pasar malam’ (night bazaar) in Lendu town. Apparently he had just completed setting the run. Upon being asked, he said the run was a short one. We took his words although feeling a bit doubtful.
On arrival at the familiar runsite at 5.10 pm, we met early birds Dr. Pandirajah and Oil Rig Lim who had just returned from their business trips in Phillipines and Brunei respectively. They looked relaxed and were anxiously preparing for the impending run. More ardent hashers trickled in as time passed by. Among them were Dr. Tan, Dr. Iqbal, Bombastic, Dennis the Menace, Carol, Kiasu Lee, Pecker, Sharpshooter Robert, Killer Tony, Sexy Chan, Wendy and a few guests. Greetings were exchanged and jokes were cracked. As appetizer for the impending run, pieces of self-made delicious fried bean curd were served by kind hearted Wendy.
The run started at 6.00 pm after a short and sweet warm-up exercise conducted by Killer Tony. It was led by Dr. Pandirajah and Dr. Tan who followed the paper on the left into the rubber plantation. It then went across a barbed wire fencing into an orchard for a short distance, uphill on a narrow bushy path in single file and across a ditch before arriving at an oil palm plantation. On the way, to ease the tension of some hashers, jokes were cracked by GM Cocker. The trail in the oil palm plantation was on laterite road. It was there that we were overtaken by energetic runners Dennis the Menace, Oil Rig Lim, Pecker and Kiasu Lee.
It was not long before the paper proceeded into a bushy secondary jungle where we moved in single file squeezing and bending through the thick undergrowths. It lasted some 10 minutes before emerging at a rubber plantation where it hit the first check after a tiring 100-meter climb uphill which made most of us panting. The connecting paper was found and joined by the front runners on the right.
The paper continued to proceed uphill through the undulating terrain for the next 10 minutes before hitting the second and last check on the top. Like the previous check, it was found and joined by the front runners on the right. It was there that we were overtaken by energetic late starters Ranger and Lynn.
The connecting paper then proceeded on a laterite road downhill into the matured oil palm plantation which led to the home trail. By then I was left behind as a sweeper to accompany new harriet Wendy who was making a great effort to complete the run after recovering from her sprained leg during her second run 3 weeks ago. It was another 2-km run passing through a chicken farm and few farm houses before arriving back at the runsite where the beer wagon was waiting. The time then was 7.15 pm. We were the last runners to come back. The distance was about 5 km. It took energetic runner Ranger 38 minutes to complete. It was later learnt from hare Yogi Bear that it took him and his daughter and son-in-law 1 hour and 40 minutes to set the run which consisted of 3 checks and 2 false trails. They must have been found and joined by the front runners.
Hash circle was conducted by GM Cocker. For reason not known, the hare was absent. As usual, a few sinners were put on ice and on-downed. It was then that GM made an announcement that MH3 would be organizing a 3-day hash run in Haadyai, South Thailand on 12th April, 2007 in conjunction with the Thai Water Festival, i.e. songkrang. As the Thai saying goes, ‘Puyin Thai sui maak’ (Thai women are beautiful), ‘Puchai Thai lor maak’ (Thai men are handsome) and ‘Ahan Thai aroi maak’ (Thai food are delicious). So don’t hesitate to join it, fellow hashers!
On-On was held at the nearby ever popular hashing Dimensi Restaurant. Four tables were taken up. A 6-course delicious Chinese dinner was served with 4 bottles of beer per table given by the hare. In addition, the hare also subsidized RM 50.00 per table for the dinner. For his good run and hospitality, the hare was on-downed. Thanks, Yogi Bear! On! On!
