A Wet Fun Run

“Rain or shine, hashing must go on! “ There was no shine but heavy downpour, but that did not deter the spirit of hashing and the celebration of the Deepavali run at Gangsa. This rain also helped to clear the miserable haze we had for the past few weeks in Melaka.

At 5.45pm, the heavy dark cloud could not hold any longer and started to pour down. Thirty odd hashers were already gathered around for the grand wet event. The hare Bombastic was already out at the run site reassuring the hashers that it would be an easy one hour safe run. After a brief warm up exercise, at 6.00 pm sharp, the pack some with umbrellas, rain coat, and parka started to run on the muddy road leading to the oil palm estate. At the entrance, the dogs kept on barking as if to say;” Mad human beings, what the hell you all are doing in this heavy downpour. “

Came to a stream, water gushing down, I was trying to find a short span to jump across, and a considerable time was wasted. When I did get across the stream, the pack in front soon disappeared. There was no response to my shout of “On On “, as the deafening pouring must have quietened the front runners

“Are you? “ I heard some body shouting at the back. It was Dr. Pandirajah. That wasn’t bad; at least I had company then. Thinking to myself, I had better follow up closely; otherwise I wouldn’t want to be left alone in this condition with the thunders and threatening lightning.

Hell, the Dr was too fast, very soon he disappeared in front of me again. As most of the paper strips was wash away, I found it was difficult to follow the trail. Thinking of backing off, I was delighted to see that the good jolly Pecker was trailing at my back.

“Are you the last runner? “ “I think so!” answered the Pecker. We managed to find some trail of paper strips up the incline of the oil palm estate and finally reached the first check. This must be a very difficult check as we heard “On On “from the pack after we had a shout of “Are you? “. We finally joined the pack on the estate road.

I really didn’t like the thunders and lightning, however, we had no choice but to proceed with the group. Finally we came to a second check; either it was difficult to find the continuing trail or the group already sensed out the direction to the home trail and the pack made a right turn and off we were on the way back to the run site.

The dogs made a welcome back bark and we knew we were safely home.

Back to the run site, lady Drug Buster was anxious to find her hubby, the Drug Buster who was the only one persisting to complete the trail. She grumbled; “he is not well and also is prepared to go for Interhash, why should he risk like that?” How joyful she was with the love written all over her face when finally Drug Buster emerged from the other direction of the run site.

A brief hash circle was conducted and the hare, the sinners, and the guest were put on ice and after that all adjourned at the Krishnan Bananas leave restaurant and all had really an enjoyable Indian food ranging from Roti Canai to Chappati with curry mutton and redang chicken; beer free flowing with the continuing on down at the expense of the Hindu members and the club. Thank you for the effort and the party ended at about 10 pm.
