Cowboy was supposed to be the hare for this week’s run at an unfamiliar run-site in Selandar. However, for reason not known, a last minute’s change without prior notice had caught many of us by surprise and driving around in circle. Among them were none other then Tongkat Ali, my partner and I. As enthusiastic hashers who were looking forward for a good weekly run at the new run-site which is some 35 km north-east of Malacca city, my partner and I arrived at the Selandar town at 5.10 pm. In the absence of any MH3 signage, I phoned Asst. On Sec. Vigraman who told me to wait at the roundabout in front of the Selandar police station. After waiting for some 30 minutes without seeing any hasher passing by, I phoned Sexy Chan who told me that the run-site had been changed to Ong Hin Chiang Estate in Machap Baru which is some 6 km backward towards the Malacca city. It was then that we saw Tongkat Ali who was driving around anxiously looking for the signage. Upon being told, we drove straight away to the new run-site. On arrival there at 5.55 pm which was well before the flag-off time, we were surprised to see a number of cars and a beer wagon with only Ngoh Kim Siah and barman Mah around. We were then informed by Mah that GM Cocker and Wendy were the relief hares who had gone in early to lay the run followed by other hashers who started the run as early birds 5 minutes ago. Very soon we were joined by Camel Lok and Holly Leong.
It was a cloudy and cool afternoon. Without wasting much time, my partner and I followed the paper on a laterite road on the right which led into a matured oil palm plantation. We were joined by Tongkat Ali, Ngoh Kim Siah, Camel Lok and Holly Leong. A short distance away, the paper turned right abreast the Machap Baru-Durian Tunggal road. It was there that we caught up with early bird Sweetie Pie who was enjoying her stroll. Some 300 meters away, the paper turned left into the undulating terrains where we were caught up by Carol the Twin Towers and Pecker. The pack then trudged through more undulating terrains and across a wide stream on a wooden beam for some 25 minutes before hitting the first simple check. It was then that we began to hear the sound of thunder followed by drizzle which made us wet from head to toe and the trails muddy and slippery.
The connecting paper was found on a laterite road on the left some 100 meters away. By then we were being caught up by late starter Dennis the Menace. The paper continued through the bushy undulating terrains for the next 15 minutes before hitting the second and the last simple check with its connecting paper found some 100 meters ahead. From then on, the paper continued to meander through the undulating and bushy terrains. As most of the papers were washed away by the rain, it took front runners Pecker, Camel Lok and Holly Leong quite some efforts to locate and place them in place for the back runners namely Dennis the Menace, Carol the Twin Towers, Tongkat Ali, my partner and I. It was at 7.15 pm when the sky began to turn dark when we reached the Machap Baru – Selendar road where we met late starter Vibrator who ran from the back trail. On my advice, he did not continue his run on the back trail by following us on the home trail on tarred road which is some l.5 km away from the run-site. Luckily he followed us otherwise he would be lost and spending the night in the oil palm plantation with the mosquitoes! We were back at the run-site at 7.35 pm where the hares GM Cocker and Wendy and several front and non runners namely Killer Tony, Sexy Chan, Kiasu Lee, Bombastic, Chole, Berry and Chee Chin Seng were gathering around the beer wagon. The turnout was some 20 plus.
It was quite a confusing run zigzagging left, right and centre like a Bhai’s turban through the undulating terrains of some 8 km. However, credit should be given to the relief hares for their initiative and good effort in laying it with a GPS in the last minute without reccee.
Hash circle was conducted jointly by GM Cocker and ex GM Vibrator. As usual, a few sinners were on-downed. It was then that GM Cocker updated us on the programme of the impending 3-day tour cum hash run in Haadyai, South Thailand in conjunction with Thai Water Festival of Songkrang from 11th to 14th April, 2006. It sounds very interesting. So don’t hesitate to register it early, fellow hashers!
On-On was held at a popular Chinese restaurant in Machap Baru. Two tables were taken up. A 7-course Chinese dinner was served. The pack had only started to disperse at 10.15 pm after refilling their empty tummies with delicious food and drink.
On! On!
