A Virgin Hare’s Scenic Run

db.jpg

Rehashed Run No: 1683; Hare: Irene Eng a.k.a. Smiling Lady: Date: 27th March, 2007; Venue: Durian Tunggal.

Irene Eng is a young and lovely harriet who always put on a smiling face. She was first introduced to the crazy hashing world by The Stud in 2006. Since then, come rain or shine, she has been running quite regularly with MH3.

Come last Tuesday, it was her turn as the hare for the first time for the weekly run. It was set at the popular hashing runsite in Durian Tunggal which is situated some 20 km east of the Malacca city. As expected, it attracted quite a big crowd.

It was a fine afternoon. On arrival early at the runsite with my partner, we met the ever-industrious On Sec. Chickadee with Hotlink. She was seen busily recording our attendance. Very soon, we were joined by Dr. Tan, Orang Kaya Ngoh and Tongkat Ali. As appetizer for our impending run, I joined Orang Kaya Ngoh to savour some delicious rojak provided by Chickadee.

It was at 5.20 pm that my partner and I started the run as early birds. We followed the paper on the laterite road which led into a matured oil palm plantation. It then meandered abreast the scenic Durian Tunggal dam on the right. Many anglers were seen fishing. They appeared surprised to see us strolling for nothing.

It was some 30 minutes later after crossing a deep ditch and passing by a farm house that it hit the first and only false trail. A spread-out search was conducted. By then we were caught up by Tongkat Ali. Its connecting paper was found on the right of the back trail behind the said farm house a short while later by my partner. It then proceeded across another deep ditch away from the said dam into another oil palm plantation. That was the time when the 3 of us showed our hashing spirit by helping each other to cross it.

The first simple check appeared at a T-junction after some 10 minutes’ walk. It was a simple check. Its connecting paper was found by me some 50 meters away on the left. It continued to meander through the oil palm plantation towards the Machap Umboo quarry for some 30 minutes before turning left into a rubber plantation towards the home trail after crossing the third deep ditch on a small tree trunk. The last deep ditch appeared at the fringe of the rubber plantation a few minutes later. It was there that we were caught up by energetic front runner Utom Singh followed closely by Dr. Pandirajah and JM Dennis the Menace.

A short distance away in the oil palm plantation, the paper hit the second and last simple check. It was found by none other than Dr. Pandirajah. From then on, it was an unobstructed run to the runsite arriving there at 7.00 pm. On the way, we met Laughing Buddha and a guest runner who joined us from the short cut on the left. More runners trickled in as time passed by. Among them were GM Cocker, Rubbish Bui, Killer Tony, Sexy Chan, SYT, Peter Loi, Helen, Carol the Twin Towers, Bombastic, Chickadee, Hotlink, Hawaii Goh, Nancy and Websitekang who looked fresh after returning from his long vacation in Down Under. Bombastic was heard grumbling that the front runners did not join the paper at the checks which might have led to his late return. The last runners who were back in one piece at 7.20 pm were none other than later starters Vibrator and his partner Biggles.

It was an enjoyable scenic run through the dam and green plantations. It was set by the hare with the assistance of Kiasu Lee and The Stud. Measurement taken by Killer Tony with the use of GPS stated that its distance was 5.6 km.

Hash circle was conducted jointly by GM Cocker, JM Dennis the Menace, Vibrator and Bombastic. As usual, the hare and a few sinners were put on ice and on-downed.

On-On was held at the popular Lian Hing Restaurant in Batu Beremdam. Four tables were fully occupied. Delicious Chinese dinner was served with 2 bottles of beer for each table. It was partly subsidized by the hare. In addition, 2 birthday cakes were cut by a guest runner and Laughing Buddha for their birthdays.

It was a jovial night. The crowd had only started to disperse at 10.15 pm. Thank you, Smiling Lady. On! On!
