Rehashed Run No: 1686; Hares: Mary Josephine/John Marshall; Date: 17th April, 2007; Venue: Bertam Ulu.
Mary Josephine and John Marshall is a loving couple who has been running with MH3 for quite some time. In spite of their tight business schedule, they tried their best to attend the weekly run as often as possible. Come yesterday, it was their turn as hares on rotation. Like their previous runs, it had attracted a big turn-out.
Bertam Ulu is no virgin runsite to MH3. It is one of its regular runsites the last of which was that of Pecker and Anitas’ run which was held on 20-2-2007. Covered with oil palm, rubber and fruit plantations on undulating terrains with fresh air, it is ideal for hashing.
As expected, there was already a big crowd which included some guests when my partner and I arrived at the runsite early. Among them were On Sec. Chickadee, Websitekang, Band Boy, Dr. Pandirajah, Kiasu Lee, Lawrence, Rubbish Bui and Horlicks. While preparing for their impending run, some of them were seen smiling broadly while recounting their sweet encounters on their recent trip to Hatyai, South Thailand in conjunction with its Songkran Water Festival on 13-4-2007.
Soon after learning from co-hares Horlicks and Rubbish Bui that it was a long run which took them 2 hours and 40 minutes to lay, my partner and I set out for the run as early birds. We followed the paper northward across a stream on a damaged bridge on a laterite road before turning left into a matured oil palm plantation. After trudging for some 35 minutes and crossing a small stream and going up a mild slope, it hit the first simple check. Its connecting paper was found some 100 meters away on the right. As usual, as early birds, we did not join the paper.
The paper continued to proceed through the oil palm plantation for a short distance before entering a rubber plantation for some 15 minutes where it hit the second simple check at a T-junction. Its connecting paper was found some 50 meters away on the left. However, it led to a simple false trail a short distance away. Its connecting paper was found on the left of the back trail a short distance away in front of the second check. It was then that we were caught up by a few scheduled front runners, namely Ranger, Pecker and GM Cocker who looked fresh and smiling after leading the said memorable Songkran trip to Hatyai.
The paper then proceeded south-east into another oil palm plantation for some 15 minutes before hitting the third and last check which was joined by the front runners. On the way and while chit-chatting with Pecker, we were overtaken by Utom Singh, Pramjit Singh, Kiasu Lee and Dennis the Menace who appeared to be struggling to catch up with the front runners. Most probably he was not in the running mood after his last minute withdrawal from the Hatyai trip. What a pity!
From then on, it was another some 3 km walk cum jog uphill and downhill through a fruit and an oil palm plantation, across a few wooden bridges, an abandoned estate quarter and two ditches before arriving back at the runsite at 7.20 pm where the front runners were enjoying their cold beer. On the way, we were overtaken by Dr. Tan, Helen of Troy, Hawaii Goh, Nancy, Vibrator, Biggles and 5 guest runners from Pataya Hash. It was at the second last ditch that the hares had hung up 2 colourful signal lights to guide the back runners. Another one was tied to the branch of a tree a short distance upfront. Thinking that it was for me, an old cock runner, I removed it and brought it back to the runsite. I paid for my mistake, as I was on-downed at the On-On later.
It was a long and enjoyable run of some 9 km which took me 1 hour and 40 minutes to complete. The last 3 runners were back at 7.45 pm when the sky was dark. Among them was Carol the Twin Towers. Of course it was a great relief to her other half Dennis the Menace who was seen smiling. Otherwise, other than the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, where else is he going to see another Twin Towers in the world!
Hash circle was conducted by GM Cocker. It was attended by some 40 hashers who included 5 guests from Pataya Hash led by its GM. They were among the other sinners who were put on ice and on-downed.
Hash run without an On-On is incomplete. It was held in open air at Soon Yeng Restaurant in Cheng Baru. A total of 5 tables were fully occupied. Delicious Chinese food was served with cold beer. Another on-downed session was held for the sinners who included the hares and guests.
It was a good run with good food which was on the hares. In addition, each of us was given an attractive pair of souvenirs which bear the MH3 logo. Thank you, hares! On! On!
