A Disrupted Run

nks.jpg

Rehashed Run No: 1687; Hare: Ngoh Kim Siah a.k.a. Orang Kaya; Date: 24th April, 2007; Venue: Tehel.

Orang Kaya or Rich Man is a veteran hasher whom I have known since joining the MH3 in early 1991. A successful and generous housing developer with busy work schedule, he used to attend the weekly run regularly.

It has been quite some time since he was the hare for the run on rotation which used to attract a big turn-out. And it was of no exception yesterday when his run came up. On my arrival at the runsite early, there was already a big gathering. Among them were Dr. Padirajah, Sweetie Pie, Dr. Tan and a few guests.

Tehel is a one the popular hashing runsites in Malacca. It is situated some 25 km south-east of the city surrounded by oil palm, rubber and fruit plantations with serene atmosphere which is ideal for hashing.

It was a sunny afternoon after a heavy morning downpour. In anticipation of a long and tough run set by co-hare Killer Tony, Sweetie Pie, my partner and I set out for the run as early birds. The paper started from across the Tehel – Bemban Road along a laterite road into a rubber plantation. Surprisingly, for a distance of some 100 meters, it was covered with smelly rubbish in plastic bags on both sides of the road. In spite of that, as ardent hashers, it did not deter us from continuing the run. For distraction, we engaged ourselves in chit-chatting.

A short distance away, the paper turned left into an oil palm and durian plantation which was flowering for some 10 minutes. It then turned south into another rubber plantation for a short distance where it hit the first complicated check. A spread out tedious search was conducted with no effect. By then we were joined by early bird Bombastic. A little while later, its connecting paper was found by Bombastic some 200 meters away on the right of the back trail.

The paper continued to proceed for a short distance before entering a bushy path and hitting a pond. It was there that we found a big stack of white shredded papers in the pond. Thinking that it was another check, we spread out for another search with no result. We then made a back trail. It was then that we were joined by a bunch of scheduled runners. Among them were Dr, Pandirajah, Ranger, Hawaii Goh, Nancy, Helen of Troy, Dr. Tan, Camel Loke and Dennis the Menace who was seen smiling understandably that he was a bachelor again after his other half Carol the Twin Towers had left for vacation in Rome. It was then that some of us decided to continue our search forward. A few others including Bombastic, Nancy, Sweetie Pie and my partner back out and took a back trail home.

It was some 200 meters across a drain and a barbed wire fencing through a bushy path ahead of the said pond that we entered into a huge well kept orchard. During the spread-out search for connecting paper, Ranger and I met an elderly man who was believed to be its owner. He expressed his displeasure of our intrusion into his fence-up orchard without permission for which we apologized. Later we were told by co-hare Killer Tony that he had laid the papers across it exiting eastward without asking for permission. It then struck my mind that for the purpose of preventing us from running across it, the said owner might have picked up those papers and thrown them into the said pond which led to our difficulties in finding the running trail. For the purpose of avoiding the event of this nature, future hares are advised to avoid laying papers across fruit plantation and vegetable farm. If there is a necessity, then permission must be sought from their owners.

After searching around in circle for a while with no trace of connecting paper, a few of us decided to leave the orchard by making a U turn towards north. The rest continued their search towards east and west wards. Led by Dr. Pandirajah, Ranger and Dennis the Menace, the 4 of us proceeded across a deep ditch into an oil palm plantation. It was some 10 minutes jog before we arrived back at the runsite at 6.45 pm after overtaking Helen of Troy, Nancy and my partner on the Tehel – Bemban Road a short distance away. Thinking that it was a fuck-up run, we screw-up poor co-hare Killer Tony who set the run with Chickadee and Alex in the absence of hare Orang Kaya who was caught in his busy business schedule and later joined us as a runner. He said that it was a 7.5 km run exiting eastward after going through the said orchard. This was confirmed by 5 on-paper runners. They were Orang Kaya who came back alone at 7.40 pm and Kiasu Lee, Biggles, Phillip and his guest who came back in group after 8.00 pm when the sky was dark.

It was a well-attended run with some 40 odd hashers who included some guests. Among them were 3 hashers from Pataya, Thailand. In the absence of GM Cocker who was downed with diarrhea after consuming too much of ‘hee’ (in Thai) or ‘pundek’ (in Tamil) during his recent Songkran Water Festival trip to Hatyai, the hash circle was conducted by JM Dennis the Menace. It saw the hare, co-hares and a few sinners being put on ice on-downed.

On-On was held in open air at Jaya Corner Seafood Restaurant in Bukit Beruang. It was well-attended with 5 tables. A 6-course delicious Chinese dinner was served with cold beer and whiskey. It was there that we saw the sudden appearance of GM Cocker who looked weak. Another on-downed session was held on a bigger number of sinners who included the hare, co-hares and guests. The dinner was on the hare. Thank you!

It was a marvelous night with good food, good drinks and good fellowship. The gathering had only begun to disperse at 10.45 pm. See you at the coming Rubbish Bui’s run at Bemban – Jasin Road, Jasin on 1st May, 2007. On! On!
