Rehashed Run No: 1692; Hare/Occasion: Mismanagement Committee/32nd ..Annual General Meeting ..Run; Date: 29th May, 2007; Venue: Bertam Ulu.
An ..Annual General Meeting ..Run is held once a year by MH3 to elect its new Mismanagement Committee. It is always organised in grand scale with good run, good food, good drink and good fun. As such, it used to attract a big turnout.
Come yesterday, it was of no exception. On my arrival at the runsite early with my partner, there was already a big turnout. Among them were Rubbish Bui, Dr. Pandirajah, On Sec. Chickadee, Dr. Tan, Tongkat Ali, Bombastic and GM Cocker. More runners trickled in as time passed by. All of us were looking forward anxiously for a good run at this popular and challenging hashing runsite of Bertam Ulu and an election of a good Mismanagement Committee.
It was a fine day. In spite of being told by Chickadee that it would be a short run set by hares Kiasu Lee and Hawaii Goh, impatience got the better of Bombastic, Tongkat Ali, my partner and I. We sneaked out for the run quietly as early birds at 5.30 pm in the presence of GM Cocker who might have closed one eye knowing that we were stubborn old cocks and slow runners whose aim was to complete the run without getting lost. Thanks and keep it up, GM!
The paper went north on a laterite road across a stream into a matured oil palm plantation. It meandered on the undulating terrain for some 20 minutes before hitting the first tough check in the middle of the laterite road. A spread-out check was conducted. Its connecting paper was found by Bombastic some 200 meters away on the right 10 minutes later. As usual, as early birds, we did not join the paper.
The paper continued to proceed north on another undulating terrain in the oil palm plantation for another 20 minutes before hitting the second and last simple check beside a stream. Another spread-out search was conducted which resulted in the finding of its connecting paper across it a short distance away by ‘pundekstic’ Bombastic who must have acquired his searching skill during his tour of duty as an officer in Jabatan Bomba (Fire Service Department). Keep it up, ‘pundek’!
The paper then led east on a laterite road up a winding steep barren hill. During the tough ascent, we heard the shouts of ‘On! On!’ from the rear. On looking back, we saw the emergence of front runners Strawberry and Ranger followed by Dr. Pandirajah. After an exhausted trudge for some 500 meters which made our cocks and balls shrunk and sweat profusely, we had finally arrived at its top and took a short break. It was then that we were being caught up by the said 3 musketeers. While enjoying our look at the beautiful surrounding scenery below, we saw energetic Dennis the Menace emerging from the second check. For the purpose of attracting his attention and encouraging him to push up the hill harder, I shouted ‘On! On!’ at him. He looked up at me and must be wondering how an old cock was running in front of him. Don’t be excited my dear, I was an early bird who started the run half an hour before you lah! The time then was 6.30 pm.
The paper then proceeded into an oil palm plantation and turned right downhill along the fringe of the barren hill parallel to the said uphill trail some 400 meters away on the right. On arrival at its base, we saw GM Cocker emerging alone from the said second check and heading towards the hill slope. Thinking that he was the last runner and not wanting him to struggle up the said hill and get lost which we could not afford as he was a good GM, I shouted at him to turn to the right and join us. He did it and joined us a short while later saving him all the troubles. As a reward, I asked him for a beer for which he agreed readily. However, up to now I am still waiting for it!
From then on, it was a home trail which was still a long way back to the runsite. The paper continued to meander left, right and centre through the oil palm and rubber plantations, 2 dragon fruit farms, a few farm houses, across a few shaky wooden bridges and a few deep ditches which needed our mutual assistance to cross. At certain parts of the trail, the paper overlapped some old papers laid by other hashing chapter. As a result, we were led on the wrong trails at 2 points which forced us making back checks. Towards the last part of the trail, the sky had begun to turn dark. Luckily I had brought along a torch light which was of great help while crossing the deep ditches. By then we were being caught up by late starter Vibrator. According to him, there were still some runners miles behind. Among them were Carol the Twin Towers and Sharp Shooter. It was then that we saw Dennis the Menace coming from the back trail alone armed with a big torch light. He looked worried. Understandingly he was concerned on the whereabouts of his other half Carol the Twin Towers. As I have mentioned earlier, other than Carol the Twin Towers and the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, where else could he find another Twin Towers in the world! To his great relief, he had eventually found her and led her back to the runsite a short while later. The last runner who came back at 8.10 pm was Sharp Shooter. He was being picked up by the kind-hearted Albert and Ah Kiow with their car along the Bertam Ulu Highway a few km away after having strayed away from a group of back runners. He appeared to be exhausted.
It was quite a tough and long run of some 9 km through some new terrain which took us 2 hours and 20 minutes to complete. It took the hares Kiasu Lee and Hawaii Goh almost the same time to set without reccee.
It was a moonlit night. As such, hash circle was held under the moonlight. However, I did not attend it as I was having my shower to clean myself a short distance away. All I could hear were on-downed songs for the sinners.
The AGM was held at the nearby Sang Yen Restaurant in Cheng Baru. It was well-attended by some 50 members. The old committee members were retained with the promotions of Dennis the Menace as Joint Master and Carol the Twin Towers as Assistant On Secretary. A new portfolio of Scribe Master was created. It was filled by me. Of course I am glad to be appointed as I am a full-time retiree and hasher since a few years ago. At least I could occupy my time hashing and writing scribe rather than banging balls! However, for the purpose of avoiding monotonous and making the scribe more lively, I would suggest more hashers to take part in writing scribe on our runs. So don’t hesitate to join me, fellow hashers!
It was during this AGM that a good news had come up. To fulfill the request of some members to increase the number of beer and soft drink from 1 to 2 for each harrier and harriet respectively which the committee could not meet due to the lack of fund, our generous John Marshall had pledged RM 6,000 to subsidize it. A standing ovation and on-downed session was accorded to him for his generosity. So make sure to attend the weekly run more often, fellow hashers!
Last and not least, the AGM had not forgotten the contribution of our ever-industrious Webmaster Websitekang for creating and maintaining the MH3 website since 5th July, 2003 to publicise its activities to the world. In appreciation of his contribution, he was on-downed with a glass of beer.
The meeting was followed by a 6-course Chinese dinner with free-flowing beer. More on-downed sessions were held for the new Mismanagement Committee members and the sinners. The dinner and drink were on the house.
It was a great and memorable evening. The crowd had only started to call it a night at 11.00 pm with full tummy and smiling face.
See you at the coming run of Kiasu Lee and Camel Lok at Air Pa’abas, Lendu on 5th June, 2007!
On! On!
