Setting An Enjoyable Run    Run No: 1696

Rehashed Run No: 1696; Hares: Pak Sek Kok (Drug Buster)/Molly Wong (Wonder Woman); Date: 26th June, 2007; Venue: IOI Estate, Krubong.

MH3 is a known pioneer mixed hashing chapter in Malacca which was founded in mid 1975. Its current members are made up of various ages ranging from 20s to 60s. Come rain or shine, it runs without fail on every Tuesday. Like other hashing chapters, it offers good run, good sweat-out and good fellowship. As such, it used to attract a big turnout.

I was first introduced to hashing in early 1972 when I ran with Kuching Hash House Harriers, Sarawak while on my working trip there with the Royal Malaysia Police. Since then, there is no turning back for me. I continued to run in various places and had only started running with MH3 in early 1991 after my posting to Malacca from Kuala Lumpur. As for my partner, she had only started joining me in 2003 after my second and full retirement with the main objective of preventing me from going astray. Since then, we have become full-time hashers. As oldies, we enjoy medium run of around 8 km in moderate terrains.

Come last Tuesday, it was our turn as hares for the run on rotation. For the purpose of offering an enjoyable run, we set the run with 2 reccees at the popular hashing runsite of IOI Estate in Krubong which is situated some 15 km north-east of Malacca city.

The first reccee was conducted on the Saturday afternoon 3 days before the run. Prior to conducting it, we had a small discussion on the pattern of our intended trail. After equipping ourselves with some shredded white papers, a torch light, a knife, a mobile phone and a bottle of mineral water each, we left the runsite with a big parking space at 4.00 pm. As usual, no compass or GPS was brought along as we only used our sense of direction.

We followed the laterite road on the right eastward into an oil palm plantation along a ditch. After walking for some 10 minutes, we turned left northward across the said ditch into another oil palm plantation. After walking for some 500 meters, we turned left for another some 500 meters where we marked the first simple check at a T-junction. Its connecting paper was marked behind a tall oil palm tree on the right some 100 meters away. As there were some old papers of previous run by other hashing chapter along the way and for the purpose of avoiding confusion, we did not overlap them.

We then headed north-east for some 10 minutes across 2 small streams before turning north on a track at the fringe of an open land. It was another 10 minutes walk and across another ditch when we arrived at a T-junction of a wide laterite road which could lead to the home trail on the left a short distance away for those well-versed runners and SCBs. However, for the purpose of stretching the run longer and making it more enjoyable, we turned right and northward up a slope into a rubber plantation. After trudging for some 10 minutes, we turned left into another oil palm plantation and downhill on an undulating terrain for another some 10 minutes before marking the second and last simple check behind an oil palm tree. Its connecting paper was marked behind another oil palm tree some 100 meters away on the right.

We then zigzagged left, right and centre northward for some 15 minutes before turning left, downhill across a drain and uphill to a wide laterite road for another 15 minutes where we marked the first and only false trail on the top of a hill to slow down the front runners such as Dr. Pandirajah, Ranger, Dennis the Menace and Strawberry. Its connecting paper was marked behind an oil palm tree some 10 meters on the right of the back trail.

From then on, it was another 50 minutes walk on a wide laterite road across the oil palm and rubber plantations, a few farm houses and estate living quarters and an Indian temple before arriving back at the runsite. It took us some 2 hours and 30 minutes to conduct this reccee.

For the purpose of making ourselves more familiar with the running trail as well as ensuring a more comfortable run for majority of the runners, a second reccee was conducted on the following afternoon. It took us 2 hours and 5 minutes after making some minor changes.

It was a fine Tuesday afternoon on the running day. On arrival at the runsite at 4.00 pm, we put up a signage each at its entrance and the car park to guide the runners. After equipping ourselves with the said paraphernalia, we set out to lay the run on the recceed trail with 1” x 6” white papers which were placed at regular intervals. As usual, more papers were placed at the checks for the purpose of enabling the front runners to join the trail. It was just in time for us to see the run started off when we arrived back at the runsite at 6.00 pm.

It was a medium run of some 8 km through moderate terrains. It took the runners between 45 minutes and 1 hour and 15 minutes to complete when the sky was still bright. They looked satisfied after a good sweat-out. It was later confirmed by a number of hand-shakes we received and Websitekang in his scribe. Of course, as hares, we feel happy as our efforts in setting a comfortable run for majority of runners were not wasted.

Hash circle at the runsite and On On at the nearby Soon Feng Restaurant in Cheng Baru were well attended by a big pack of 50 which included a few guests. Of course, we were also delighted to receive such a good support for our run. Thanks. In appreciation, the On On was on the hares.

See you at the coming run of veteran hashers Peter Loi and Helen Lee in Durian Tunggal tomorrow. On On!
