A Veteran Hares’ Enjoyable Run With Confusing False Trail

Rehashed Run No: 1697; Hares: Peter Loi (Loi Kong)/Helen Lee (Helen Of Troy); Date: 3rd July, 2007; Venue: Durian Tunggal.

Peter Loi and Helen Lee are veteran and devoted hashers. They are among a few pioneer members who are still running regularly with MH3.

Come last Tuesday, it was their joint run which was held at the popular hashing runsite in Durian Tunggal. As expected, it attracted a big turnout of some 60 which included a good number of young guests.

As usual, itching and looking forward for a good run, my partner and I arrived early at the runsite which was situated in an oil palm plantation on the left of Durian Tunggal – Machap Baru Road. Whilst there, we met a few earlier birds led by On Sec. Chickadee and Hotlink heading towards a nearby Mamak coffee shop to have a cup of teh tarik. As we were anxious for an early take-off, we did not join them on their invitation.

It was a fine day. We started the run as early birds by following the paper which headed north on a laterite road into a matured oil palm plantation. It meandered right, centre, left and upslope for some 20 minutes before hitting the first simple check on a path. Its connecting paper was found a short distance ahead.

The paper continued to proceed northward in the oil palm plantation for a short distance before turning left upslope into a rubber plantation for another 30 minutes when it hit the second and last simple check at its fringe. Its connecting paper was found a short while later some 20 meters ahead in an oil palm plantation. Surprisingly it only proceed head for a short distance of some 30 meters before hitting the first and only tough and confusing false trail. By then we were being caught up by another seasoned early bird Bombastic. A spread-out search within the radius of some 200 meters was then conducted without success. By then we were joined by a big pack of scheduled and front runners. Among them were Ranger, Dr. Pandirajah, Pecker, Rubbish Bui, Pramjit Singh, SYT, Nancy, Kiasu Lee, Killer Tony, Sexy Chan and Utom Singh. After searching for some 30 minutes and thinking it was a fuck-up run set without reccee, a big group of us decided to make a back trail to the runsite. It was on our way back to the second check that we heard the shout of On On! Contrary to our hashing rule, the connecting paper was placed on the left downhill some 300 meters before the second check which was found by Utom Singh. Of course it was a good way to group up the front and back runners, but it had caused some anxiety and frustration to some of us who wasted a lot of time and energy running around in circle like an escapee from Tampoi Mental Hospital.

From then on, the paper headed north-east into a rubber plantation for a short distance before turning south and south-west back to the home trail passing by the fringe of the Durian Tunggal Dam, a rubber plantation and a durian orchard for the next 30 minutes. The panoramic view of the said Dam was fantastic. We arrived back at the runsite at 7.15 pm after 2 hours outing. In spite of its diversion from hashing rule which caused some confusion, it was generally an enjoyable run through moderate terrains of 6.8 km as measured by Killer Tony with the use of GPS. It was set by its hare Peter Loi and assisted co-hare Hawaii Goh. Owing to her busy work schedule, joint hare Helen Lee did not join them but joined us as runner instead. The last runners were back some 15 minutes later when the sky was still bright.

Hash circle was conducted by GM Cocker. In attendance was a big pack of some 60 hashers who included some 10 guests. As usual, the hares and the sinners were put on ice and on-downed and ever-industrious Websitekang was seen clicking away photos with his digital camera for posting in the MH3 website. So do take a look at them.

Hash run is usually followed by an On On. It is meant to restore the lost energy by filling the tummy with food and beer besides enhancing fellowship. It was held in the popular Hiking Chinese Restaurant in downtown Melaka Raya. A total of 5 tables were fully occupied. A 5-course delicious Chinese dinner was served with cold beer and ‘Chinese brandy’. It was followed by another on-downed session for the hares and sinners. In addition, a monthly birthday cake cutting ceremony was held for the July birthday boys and girls. Among them were Viagraman and Moon Face. The dinner was on the hares. Thanks. The crowd had only started to disperse at around 10.00 pm.

See you at the coming run of Robert the Sharpshooter at Gapam on 10-7-2007.

On! On!
