A Grand Birthday Celebration Run

Rehashed Run No: 1742; Hare/Occasion: Mismanagement Committee/Birthday Run; Date: 13th May, 2008; Venue: Ozana, Bukit Katil.

Malacca Hash House Harriers (MH3) was born on 13th May, 1975. It was fathered by Raymond Quinn from Seremban. It is a mixed hashing chapter which runs on every Tuesday afternoon without fail come rain or shine. The pioneer of 8 hashing chapters in Malacca, it has a membership of some 80. Its official drink is Tiger beer which makes its drinkers roar. Unlike what it means as ‘asshole’ for the word ‘Malacca’ in Greece, it is not an Asshole Hash House Harriers but a respected running club which offers us good run, good sweat-out, good fellowship and good fun.

I started my hashing with Kuching Hash in Sarawak in 1972 when I was on job assignment there and first joined MH3 in early 1991 after my transfer to Malacca from Kuala Lumpur. Since then, there is no turning back for me. I really enjoy the hashing concept of run, drink and socialize with no involvement of social status and politic which makes us equal, problem-freed and healthy. Among the ardent hashers who are still running since then are GM Cocker, Vibrator, Biggles, Bobby Lim, Peter Looi, SYT, Helen Lee, Sleeping Beauty, Daniel Lok, Killer Tony, Dr. Pandirajah, Dr. Dave, Kemmy, Dr. Tan, Bombastic, Baby Elephant, Gilbert Chee, Chee Chin Seng, Sharp Shooter Robert, Teresa, Sweetie Pie, Orang Kaya Ngoh, Horlick, Pecker, Janet See and Moon Face.

Time flies. Come last Tuesday it was MH3’s 33rd. birthday which rarely fell on its running day. As announced by GM Cocker 2 weeks ago, it was going to be celebrated grandly with its On On at the downtown 5-star Equatorial Hotel. As such, all of us were looking forward for it anxiously.

It was a fine Tuesday afternoon. As arranged earlier, my partner and I arrived at the familiar run-site early to accompany Killer Tony to set the run. Tagging along were Sexy Chan and Helen Lee.

It was at 4.30 pm that we started leaving the run-site to set the running trail after a short briefing by Killer Tony on its intended length of 4 km as directed by GM Cocker and equipping ourselves with some shredded white papers, a knife, a GPS and a bottle of drinking water each. Led by Killer Tony who was armed with a GPS, the trail proceeded southward on a wide laterite road into an open bush and a dragon fruit plantation for 25 minutes before arriving near a T-junction at the fringe of an oil palm plantation where the first simple check was placed. Its connecting paper was placed some 100 meters ahead after an eastward corner.

The trail continued eastward and southward on the wide laterite road for another 15 minutes where a first and only tougher false trail was set at the top of a hill slope in a dragon fruit plantation after another T-junction to slow down the energetic front runners such as Dennis the Menace, Dr. Pandirajah and Ranger. Its connecting paper was placed some 100 meters on the left of the back trail after the said T-junction.

The trail then continued to head southward into a short stretch of bushy path before hitting a river and turning right westward along it. A short distance away, it turned left southward across a wooden bridge into a vegetable farm. A few farmers looked surprise to see us crazy hashers throwing white paper on the trail for no apparent reason. And it was another short distance away before we arrived on a tarred road in a village where the second and last tougher check was placed. Its connecting paper was placed in a bushy rubber plantation some 50 meters away southward. The time then was 5.40 pm. From then on, it was the home trail across another short stretch of rubber plantation, a long stretch of new Bukit Katil highway and a housing estate before arriving back at the run-site at 6.30 pm where a huge pack of cars were parked and the beer wagon was waiting for the runners to come back. It was then that we saw non-runners Chickadee and Kwan Yin Mah exposing their sexy bodies while taking their bath beside a car. What a good coincidence!

It was a medium run of 7.8 km as recorded by Killer Tony’s GPS due to his oversight while enjoying our chit-chatting. The first runner was back at 6.55 pm. He is none other than energetic Dr. Pandirajah. The last runners were back at 7.40 pm when the sky began to turn dark. Each runner was given a beautiful T-shirt to be worn at the On On.

Hash circle was conducted by GM Cocker. It was well attended. As usual, the hare Killer Tony and a number of sinners were on-downed.

As arranged, On On was held at the downtown 5-star Equatorial Hotel. It was well attended by some 90 hashers who included 2 invited guests from each of the other 7 Malaccan hashing chapters. Among them were Lim Tian Han, James Bond, Mary, Alibaba and Quah. A freebies bag containing a road tax sticker, a boil egg and a packet of groundnut was given to each attendee. Delicious buffet dinner was served with free-flowing Tiger beer and brandy. Each member was presented a Graduation scroll. In attendance was a live band led by guitarists Dr. Dave and Pecker which attracted a big pack of us taking the floor to dance wildly.

It was a grand and enjoyable birthday celebration run and memorable night. A big salute to its mismanagement committee for the job well done!

On! On!
