A GRAND ORANG-UTAN 500TH CELEBRATION RUN

Orang-Utan Hash House Harriers (OUH3) was born on 7th January, 1999. It is a prick (man-only) hashing chapter fathered by Batu Api, my former hashing mate in Malacca Hash House Harriers (MH3). It is the 6th oldest of the 8 hashing chapters in Malacca after MH3, Malacca Sunday Hash (MSH), Malacca Batang Hash House Harriers (MBH3), Malacca Hash House Hazards (MHHH) and Kota Melaka Hash House Harriers (KMH3). The other 2 younger hashing chapters are Malacca Full Moon Hash House Harriers (MFMH3) and Malacca Sunday Hash House Harriers and Harriets (MSH4). Come rain, shine or tsunami, it runs without fail on every Thursday afternoon.

Time flies. Come last week it was its 500th run which was celebrated grandly at 2 attractive run-sites. For the convenience and joy of ardent and crazy hashers, it was held for 2 days on 7th and 8th June, 2008 last Saturday and Sunday which were non working days. As expected, it had attracted some 700 registrations locally from a few States in Malaysia such as Johor, Negeri Sembilan and Selangor, and internationally from Korea, Thailand, Russia and China.

It was a cloudy and cool afternoon after an early morning downpour. Looking forward for a good run, good fellowship and good fun, my partner and I arrived early at the familiar spacious run-site of Zarina Industrial Park, Rembia which is some 20 km north of Malacca City. Not surprisingly, it was already crowded with a huge pack of enthusiastic harriers and harriets. Familiar faces were met and grandfather stories were told. Among them were Cocker, Chickadee, Kuan Yim Mah, Dennis the Menace, Carol the Twin Towers, Mary, James Bond, Kiasu Lee, GM Wine Seller, Rasputin, Garfield, Alex, Batu Api, Cowboy, Wild Boar, Ranger, Alibaba and 4896 (Si Peh Kow Lat). Each of us was given a beautiful colourful T-shirt and a bag of hashing goodies. A number of food stalls were set up and open to provide us light food, refreshment and Heineken beer.

It was at 4.00 pm that GM Wine Seller gave a welcoming speech on a stage followed by a short and sweet warm-up exercise to the tune of music led by a couple of sexy harriets from MSH4. A short while later, the run was flagged-off by the Bemban State Assemblyman, YB Chua Kian Hua. It was made up of a long and a medium run. The paper led north for a short distance on a tarred road before turning east into a rubber cum oil palm plantation. While enjoying our leisure jog, we were engaged in chitchatting. It was some 20 minutes later while heading northward that it hit a Y-junction which separated the run. The long run led eastward by following the white paper whereas the medium run led northward by following the yellow paper. A big pack of energetic runners such as Denise the Menace and Mary were seen taking the long run. A smaller pack took the medium run. They included Carol the Twin Towers, 4896, Ah Chern, my partner and I.

The paper continued to lead northward through the undulating terrains of rubber and oil palm plantations for some 45 minutes before arriving at a T-junction in a rubber plantation where it hit the white paper of the long run. It was there that we saw 3 long run runners heading southward towards us from the opposite direction. Both papers then joined up to form the home trail eastward. It was some 400 metres away that the papers hit a waist-deep swamp measuring some 10 metres wide which made crossing difficult. It was there that we showed our hashing spirit by assisting one and other. Later I was told that small-sized Mary and a few other harriets were being carried across by some harriers. Oh, how I wish I was one of those lucky harriers! From then on, the papers continued to trudge through the bushy forest, in a long and shallow stream, across a small tunnel, up a hill to a water tank before arriving at a long tarred road which led to the run-site where a huge pack of front runners were enjoying their varieties of delicious buffet dinner at the various stalls with free-flowing Heineken beer. The time then was 6.15 pm. The last runners were back some 30 minutes later.

It was a well-set, good and challenging run of some 8 km for the medium run and 12 km for the long run. Later I was told that there was another short run of 4 km for the chicken which started off at 5.00 pm. Among its runners were Hawaii Goh, Nancy, SYT and Helen. All the runners appeared to have enjoyed them.

Hash circle was conducted jointly by GM Wine Seller and its Organising Chairman Rasputin Ong. It was well attended. It saw a number of sinners who included all the GMs being put on-ice and on-downed.

The programme for the night was fantastic. It saw the stage shows performed by 2 sexy singers cum dancers, sexy dance by 5 MH3 harriets, beer drinking competition and lucky draws for free gifts which included hampers and golf club memberships. It was then announced by its Organising Chairman that OUH3 would be organising its 10th Anniversary Run in Malacca on 14 and 15th March, 2009. Its damage is RM 80.00 per head. So make sure you register for it if you want to enjoy the fun, fellow hashers!

It was an enjoyable and memorable night. The crowd had only begun to disperse at around midnight with full tummies, clear minds and smiling faces.

The run-site for the second day was at an open field in Cheng town which is some 10 km north of Malacca City. A milder recovery run of some 5 km across a housing estate, a rubber plantation, an oil palm plantation, 2 small hills and a graveyard was set. It was attended by a smaller pack of some 60 runners. It was flagged-off at 10.30 am after a short and sweet warm-up exercise. Among its runners were Dennis the Menace, Carol the Twin Towers, Mary and Kiasu Lee. However, as oldies who required a warm-down after a hectic medium run the day before, my partner and I did not complete the run. We joined a few other SCBs taking a short-cut back to the run-site halfway through a rubber plantation. The time taken was 25 minutes. The first on-trailed runner was back some 5 minutes later. He is none other than an energetic harrier from Korea. As a reward, three quarter way through the run, he was presented by the organizer with a thorny ripe durian which he carried by wrapping it with his T-shirt. More on-trailed runners trickled in as time passed by. As the first 50 on-trailed runners, they were smiling after being rewarded with a durian each. The last runner was back at around 11.45 am. He is none other than Ranger, the sweeper. We then took a break to enjoy our cold Heineken beer with some durians which were given by the Mat Salleh runners such as Denis the Menace and his other half Carol the Twin Towers who do not enjoy eating them.

Hash circle was conducted jointly by the organiser and the GMs of a few other chapters. Among them were GM Cocker of MH3 and an 11-year-old GM from the Korean Hash. It saw a big number of sinners being put on-ice and on-downed.

On-On was held at the nearby Siang Yan Restaurant. It was well attended with 16 tables fully occupied. A delicious 6-course Chinese lunch was served with free-flowing Heineken beer. Another on-downed session for the sinners and lucky draw were held. It ended at ar

ound 3.00 pm. It was a well-organised celebration run. Credit should be given to its organising committee for the job well done. See you at its coming 10th Anniversary Run!

On! On!
