" Bengali so long ----"a familiar hash hymn most hashers know. No, this time it was Bengali so high! The climb of the high
Panchor hill at Machap Umbo was indeed exhilarating. The ingenuity of the Punjabi Members, namely Yogi Bear, Lucky Pang, Tomy and their
partners, made their run, a very memorable one to celebrate their New Year day, which fell on the 14th April. Vasakhi,
sounded new to most of us as we were more familiar with CNY, Hari Raya and Deepavali, but at least we know now there is a VASAKHI.
I reached the run site which was a quarry site early, and the early birds like Dr Tan, Animal Kingdom,Oil Rig Lim, NKS, Sweety Pie, and Ah long ( Thursday
H3 ) were already there. At 5.30 pm sharp, Oil Rig Lim, Dr Tan, Ah Long and I decided to enter the trail.Looking at the quarry
hill, more or less we guessed there would be a big climb. Following the paper trail in an oil palm estate, we soon reached the
first check very quickly.Ah Long, familiar with the area went straight left to find a little gate which he claimed was the key
up the hill, and Dr Tan, Oil Rig went straight up and found some old papers. NKS and Sweety Pie came and we advised them to look on the
right hand side. All attempts failed, and somehow Dr Tan checked on back trail and on the left he shouted " On On " and everybody
followed except NKS and Sweety Pie who dropped out.
It was all on the way up, the oil palm trees grew well as the soil looked fertile. Soon we reached the climax of the
climb, a quarry waste dump, some 200 feet up probably with a 75 degree gradient facing us. Oh, no! with the loose rocks, big
and small imbedded on the dumped soil, the scenario was a kind of a possible avalanche. Ah Long already reached the top and
Dr Tan was half way. Dr Tan shouted " Kang, go back, too dangerous up here" while Oil rig and I were still at the foot of the hill.
I hesitated, and Oil Rig said: " Come on! if Vijai could go up, so could we." " Ok lah, die die lah!" let's take the risk. We
failed to realise that in fact tricky Vijai went reversed way to lay papers, he slided down. The secret was revealed by the cohare,
Holicks later at On On. We finally got over it with extreme care as a falling loose rock could kill or hurt after gaining the
momentum.
The scenery viewed from the top was spectacular, and we enjoyed a little bit of a run on the undulating range. Chee Cheng Seng,
Sen Fatt caught up with us and we ran for a while. Oil rig sped up and ran ahead. Soon we came to the downhill side and we faced
two trails ahead, one on the main road and another one on a side track on the right. Common sense told us to follow the main road,
but later I realised that there was a check or false trail on the right track as was revealed by Alex and Pecker later. They were
fooled by the side track thinking that was an easy way out. Downhill is always difficult for me and many people then surpassed
me, Au Kait, Sexy Chan, Tony, Gm, Alex , Young man Lee, Petet Looi, and I thought I was the last one dragging my feet home.
It was almost 7.10 pm and suddenly, Pecker came up from behind and later Gerard also caught up with us. " I like your helmet,
and today I actually need one! " said Gerard, who still looked a bit worry about the dumped quarry waste heap. At least, some one
has appreciated my safety helmet. It was about 7.20pm by the time we reached the run site.A beautiful T shirt was given to everyone who was present.
The hash circle was formed, and there were quite a number of Bhais present, most of them their uncles, cousins and friends.
" Chan Mari Chan, and Bhai on the ice ----" the popular hash song filled the air. The fun continued until at about 8.30pm and then
the pack adjourned at the Mei Yuen Reastaurant at Machap Baru for on on. Most of the hashers expected some kind of Chapati,
and curry for on on, but no, the real Chinese food came for the rescue. Five tables were fully occupied and if not because of the China
Hash in Hainan, probably two more tables would be occupied. Beer free flowing and the food was fully footed by the hares. " They
are the good Bhais" so said everybody.
Verdict: Exhilarating climb and a refreshing run, good food with plenty of beer on the hares. A big " thank you " to all of
them.
